Welcome to the first annual June Institute for Schools at the Iowa Events Center in Des Moines Iowa!  

We hope you find what you need across this 3-day event focused on supports in the areas of literacy, mathematics, social-emotional-behavioral well-being and mental health, subgroups, and culture/climate! This site is for all attendees to have access to presenters and session materials.  This is not where you register.    

Please note that registration must be completed within the AEA Registration System, and that special sessions are pre-registration only. Registration links for the Conference and Special Sessions are located HERE.

Thomas A. Mayes is the attorney for the Iowa Department of Education's Division of Learning and Results, where he advises the department on special education law and policy and provides information on special education law to Iowa's parents and educators. Before joining the Department, he was staff attorney for the Iowa Court of Appeals, a staff attorney in Iowa Legal Aid's Waterloo office, and law clerk to Justice James H. Carter of the Supreme Court of Iowa. He is a member and former president of the National Council of State Education Attorneys and was appointed by Chief Justice Marsha Ternus to the state's Children's Justice State Council.  He is a member of the National Association of Counsel for Children and is a certified Child Welfare Law Specialist.  He is a member of the Iowa Board of Law Examiners.  Mr. Mayes earned his bachelor's degree from Baylor University, his law degree, with highest distinction, from The University of Iowa College of Law, and a master's degree in educational leadership from Lehigh University.
