In a meta-analysis of early literacy studies, the National Early Literacy Panel found strong support for the importance of phonological awareness, alphabetic knowledge, writing/name writing, as some of the strongest predictors of later reading and writing success.  As children learn to read and write, they rely on their use and understanding of oral language structures as a foundation.  Young children’s oral language skills, including vocabulary, should receive explicit efforts of support in the early care and education settings including in preschool.  This session will examine the English language structure and how intentional embedded learning opportunities of various early literacy components can be provided to strengthen young children’s skills in these areas.
